To become acquainted with new students and reacquainted with friends we began the year with self portraits. This past summer I saw an obituary for Lucian Freud in the NY Times and realized I hadn't seen much his work, so I became familiar with it through books from the library. I found this self portrait of him surrounded by a town and showed it to the students as inspiration for a self portrait, asking them to surround themselves with whatever they wanted--their interests, family, school, animals, toys, etc. See if you can recognize anyone you know!
