The first through fourth grade students explored three different ways to look at and paint plastic farm animals. The first was to paint the shapes that make up a specific animal, the second was to paint a silhouette shape, and the third was to paint the contours or outlines, all with a brush and black paint. Then I gave them a limited palette of colors to create a farm scene from memory. I would have preferred to look at live animals on a farm, but hopefully the children will see with fresh eyes the next time they drive by or visit one.
