Drawing Experiment

I gave the students in Jason and Karl's classes a copy of a Lucian Freud portrait and asked them to draw it upside down on a separate sheet of paper with pencil. The purpose of the exercise is to look at formal elements such as lines, darks, lights, shapes, etc. and to draw them rather than perceived notions of what a mouth, nose, eyes, etc. should look like.

Next they pasted a copy of half of an animal photograph on a piece of paper and drew the other half. This seemed to be a satisfying challenge for them, and they told me they were pleased with the results.
