All the first through fourth grade students have finished their self portraits, and I am completely amazed at their observational and drawing skills when they look into a mirror at themselves. I demonstrated to them how to observe the lines they see, and to feel love for those lines as they transfer the marks onto paper. I drew a circle, a semi circle smile, circles with dots for eyes, and asked if that is how I want them to draw a human face. They knew it wasn't what I was looking for from them, and they realized the difference from drawing those symbols instead of the lines that actually form their own faces. I especially noted that the iris of an eye is covered with an eyelid, and is not a complete circle, otherwise it expresses fear or alarm.
