As we begin the year with the magic theme we are thinking about how artists create the illusion of 3D space on a flat surface, as well as create impossible worlds. We looked at the work of Magritte, and by chance there is a retrospective of his work on in Chicago right now.
Artists create a sense of depth in landscapes by having the color fade near the horizon line and by putting larger objects in the foreground and smaller ones in the distance. We experimented with this "trick" by painting a sky and ground that is inhabited by collage objects cut out from magazines.
