On Thursday Amy brought in the pieces of chipboard that were cut by laser at the UM Fab Lab and presented them to the students as a game. Ella had helped her paint the buildings with black, silver, and green paint. Amy laid out oil cloth that had a grid pattern on it for Chris' class and a stripe pattern for Joanna's, and gave the children symbols to stick down and use as guides for city planning.
Then they got to work attaching the buildings with cut out notches.
We realized that the cut out negative space could be used for something, and Amy came up with the idea to trace inside and cut out paper buildings. For the urban fabric buildings the children used newspaper, regarding the print and patterns and using them in interesting ways. She brought in beautiful printed paper for the object architecture.
A magnificent city mural is still in the works!
Thank you, Amy! We need to find a way to display the intricately detailed and imaginative silhouettes, and when the mural is completed I will hang it up somewhere in the building.
