I printed out copies of a Lucian Freud self portrait and had the students place it upside down in front of themselves and then copy it. Before they began I demonstrated how usually we draw what we think an eye looks like, and make a smiling line for a mouth, symbols almost like a smiley face. This time I wanted them to draw the lines they were looking at rather than think about what they were drawing. After this experiment they drew their own faces by looking in a mirror, thinking about the lines and shapes in front of them.

I've never been able to figure out how to draw a nose correctly.
