Science and Art

George and I collaborated on a project in the art room. He dug up clay that the children found near the Manchester building and researched how to process it into art clay. He put it through a sieve and had the students knead sand into it.

We took the children to County Farm Park to collect natural materials to press into the clay. I discussed design elements with them, reminding them that our ears enjoy rest notes in music, and our eyes enjoy a rest too, so they considered how busy they wanted their tiles to be. They made decisions as to whether to make them symmetrical or not. A few created representational images. Each tile is truly unique. After they are fired in the kiln we will mount them on a wall somewhere in the school.
