Kindergarten Monsters

I read a book called Some of My Best Friends Are Monsters to the kindergarten students and then asked them to paint a picture of themselves with a friendly monster of their own creation.

Does anyone know why four and five year old children are able to make such perfect compositions, with color, lines and forms each in what seems to be the right place? I wonder if anyone has researched this...
