Tool Drawings

The students first drew the tools that we borrowed from Tom Friedlander using the contour drawing technique, where their eyes followed the lines they saw when planes met and at edges of forms. I encouraged them not to be concerned with the results, as this is a learning experience.

One student added cross hatching.

This was a hard concept for the younger students, so I suggested drawing the shape of the tool first with oil crayon, and then adding the contour lines.

Some students tried using charcoal.

With their newly acquired familiarity with tools, I asked the students to invent characters using the tools as inspiration, as if they were making drawn assemblages.
