Inspiration from Lydia Corbett

I read a book to the students called Picasso and the Girl with a Ponytail by Laurence Anholt. It is about Picasso's eighteen year old model. The children were fascinated by the story, and after we learned that she became an artist, I looked for her online and found two self published books of her work! One of her techniques is to set up flowers to paint, and as she works with black line and watercolor she is freed up to let her imagination roam to create a composition that includes other imagery that is important to her. Below are pictures of her when she modeled for Picasso, and in her studio now, as well as some of her watercolor paintings. Her work ties in beautifully with our theme of identity.

The students began their work with black line as she did, and then added watercolor wash after I demonstrated different techniques with the medium.
