I found a calendar of bird photos and had the students look at the shapes and colors and draw what they saw on gray paper with oil crayons. They used the sides of the crayons, and rubbed thick applications with their fingers which was almost like painting with oil paint. Using these simple and colorful images as reference turned out to be a lovely experience for all the children!
