What an amazing adventure Amy took the 3/4 grade students on yesterday at the UM architecture Fab Lab and exhibition gallery! It
began with Aaron Willette showing the children a large robot. They were
curious and knowledgeable and had a torrent of questions that he
graciously answered.
Then he took everyone upstairs to see the laser cutting machines where the students could watch their own designs of silhouette cityscapes being cut into plywood with what looked like a small dot of light. Three AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) volunteered
their time to convert the children's drawings to digital files. Thank you to Jeff Burgess (president), Meghan Royster (vice
president), and Zoe Parsigian (member) for all the work you did for the children and our school!
Next we visited the gallery to see an exhibit called 'In The Garden Grows a Lump'. There we saw beautiful rare old books with images of the picturesque curated by Andrew Holder. He introduced us to his show and told us that he made the lumps that observers could climb and crawl on and into with cement and plaster, as well as the beautiful wooden cases for the books. It was absolutely fascinating!
Thank you, Amy! We are all grateful to you for your enthusiasm and sense of wonder, and that you share it with such a generous spirit.
There is more to come...stay tuned for part 3.
