Marbled Paper

Bora's mom, Esra, brought a paper marbling kit from Turkey and shared it with the 3/4 grade classrooms. The beautiful results have inspired me to research how to continue to explore this process. I purchased carrageenan which is a seaweed that when heated with water results in a liquid that is heavier than water. Alum is used to coat the paper before laying it on inks that are painted onto the surface of the carrageenan. Below are my first experiments with black ink. We'll give this a try in art club this Thursday. Maybe the children can paint into the images they pick up with the ink.
