Still Life Drawings

I brought in treasures from home: a Sasha doll, some Japanese wooden kokeshi dolls, a couple of handmade Inuit dolls and a carved stone seal, some David Kirk robots, a carved wooden doll from England, etc. I asked the students to carefully observe the object in front of them. Each child drew their still life in an expressive and unique way. One first grader was so pleased with his drawing that he told me this was the best day of his life. Another first grader drew the foreshortening of a leg on the robot and the dog. Some put the Inuit figures into scenes. I asked a second grade student about the hill like shapes in the background of his picture, and he told me they are the fingers on a palm of a hand that is holding the still life as well as an artist drawing it!
