UM Art Museum Field Trip

Docents at the UM Art Museum took small groups of children in grades one to four on a tour that focused on our theme of genres. We saw a small Calder sculpture, and paintings that the students recognized as still life. On our return to the classroom we explored Fauvism with the use of unnatural color and the children remembered the Picasso with three people reading a book, one with a green face. They were intrigued with the power figure from Africa and enjoyed a hands on experience that related to a Louise Nevelson piece. One docent asked the children to tell her where they would hide in a large landscape painting and what they would see from that view point. I found it an interesting way to engage them and pull them into the art work.
