For a couple weeks the art room was filled with the autumn bounty from the farmer's market. I set vases of flowers and colorful vegetables onto cloth draped over small stools on the work tables. The children looked carefully at the still life on their table and painted the lines they saw, either in black or another chosen color. Then they chose a second color to begin to paint the objects, putting some of it in the background to unite their composition. I encouraged them to focus on the entire painting including the negative space right from the beginning.
When they finished their tempera and watercolor paintings, they practiced again, this time with pastels.
