As we begin the year with the theme of identity I think of Walt Whitman's Song of Myself. There is a section where he speaks of a child who went forth, and the first object he look'd upon, he became, and how the lilacs became part of this child, and the grass, and the pond, and his own parents...
Our own exploration for this first theme will include drawings inspired by Walt Whitman, oil crayon self portraits, printmaking with the subject matter of each child's perceived personal animal daemon, water color flower still life with added personal imagery inspired by the art of Lydia Corbett who was a model for Picasso and an artist herself, and charcoal drawings of toys or objects that are treasured by individual children.
I look forward to a year of creativity with the students at SK!
